A food system to vitalize you and your landscape
It is time for a new era of agriculture where soil is center and the sky is the limit. We transform reclaimed oak casks into spectacular, towering cornucopias. Bespoke design for every garden space.
The Mission
Modern agriculture is failing us. Our food systems demand drastic change. Our mission is to deliver a scalable solution, working with nature to nourish people and planet.
It begins in your garden.
The Solution
We unite the space efficiency of vertical agriculture with the irreplaceable productivity of healthy soil, to unlock agricultural productivity at every scale, in every dimension. Our innovative, handcrafted vertical planters herald an end to hundreds of acres of monocrops and a beginning to a garden-to-farm scale food solution.
Soil-Centric Vertical Agriculture
Soil is the lifeblood of every ecosystem, including food systems.
It is the life within soil, cycling organic matter and nutrients, that gives rise to new life.
Soil-centric vertical agriculture is the implementation of such vigorous, ecological soil building that it unlocks an additional dimension from which to grow: the vertical plane.
Soil is the lifeblood of every ecosystem, including food systems. Myriad agricultural techniques throughout human history and across civilizations have tapped into this core knowledge that healthy soil is fundamental - that farming means soil care. But in the wave of technological and chemical innovation that is modern agriculture, so much is forgotten.
Healthy soils are built by diversity. Soil is a complex of interactions between organisms across Kingdoms of life and trophic levels. It is the life within soil, cycling organic matter and nutrients, that gives rise to new life. Deep roots decompact soil, bringing carbon fixed by their leaves down to the depths of the rhizosphere. In turn, the nutrients fixed by roots - with the help of fungal and bacterial symbionts - are transported to the leaves, and returned to the earth when leaves die. The diversity of roots reflects manifold in the diversity of microbial symbionts. Earthworms, beetles and other tunnelling invertebrates aerate the soil and physically mix soil particles. Ground cover ensures soil is never bare for long, shielding the life within from damaging UV and ensuring continuous input of organic matter. Everything has a purpose and nothing exists alone.
Soil-centric vertical agriculture is the implementation of such vigorous, ecological soil building that it unlocks an additional dimension from which to grow: the vertical plane. Unlike 2D agriculture, vertical space is constrained only by our capacity to build upwards. The integration of vertical engineering with soil-building practices and an appreciation for the complexity of natural ecosystems presents an innovative solution to the failing modern agricultural systems.

Our Philosophy
We are nature led, inspired by healthy natural ecosystems.
We build diversity above and below ground, in the plants and in the soil, because this is fundamental to a thriving and resilient system. Different plants use and create different nutrients and microclimates, grow to different heights and depths, and provide food and shelter to different insects. Some insects will pollinate our crops, some will eat pests. In the soil, different invertebrates, fungi and bacteria will break down different forms of organic matter and provide diverse nutrients to plant roots. We embrace complexity.
We grow in three dimensions. Nature is not flat, so why are our food systems? From the ‘weeds’ growing in stone walls, to the mosses growing on trunks to the saplings growing out of other trees - if you expand your mind into the vertical space, you will find life there. And, unlike modern vertical farming, we keep soil center. There is so much yet to learn about soil, it cannot be replaced by circulating nutrients in water.
First and last, we think in cycles. Nature is cyclical and doesn’t know waste. We begin with repurposing retired oak casks. We fill the casks with a diverse and tailored compost core. We cultivate seasonally and climatically appropriate plants, and we reintegrate any ‘waste’ materials back into the system. We build a long-lasting and dynamic cycle, never the same but always spectacular.
Our Story
It all started with a strawberry planter that was just a bit too small. I thought to myself, "Gee, this should be the size of a skyscraper, and grow literally anything other than strawberries."
I immediately saw a future with towering implementations of permaculture. Companion planting and biodiverse spacing applied to a vertical plane. In a single solution, the footprint of our food systems vastly reduced and the diversity of our diets enhanced.
We live in the Calder Valley, where food grows vertically in abundance. From dandelions high in the crevices of veteran trees in Centre Vale Park, to angelica in the limbs of a canal-side willow. Every drystone wall boasts a range of edible plants growing up out of tiny cracks - cow parsley, nettles, herb robert.
Nature clearly produces food in three dimensions, so why shouldn't we?
