Why Oak Casks?

Oak casks are extraordinary. Each cask will have a unique story, but they all share excellent qualities that enable them to retire gracefully from ageing spirits to growing plants.

Casks are incredibly durable and solid. They are made from thick oak, which is heat-treated and charred. This increases the exposed internal surface area and imparts rich and complex flavours into liquors.

As a planter, charred wood is ideal because it takes much longer to decompose. Charred cask wood is food grade and has an open, aerated physical structure, perfect for supporting the aerobic bacteria necessary for healthy soil.

Product Dimensions

Each cask varies in dimension slightly. They are approximately 90cm tall, up to 80cm in diameter at the widest point (the middle), and just under 70cm in diameter at the top.

We recommend giving at least 30cm between barrel and path so that your plants have plenty of space to bush out. This works out to a footprint under 2 sqm.

Cask Core

We will fill each cask with approximately of 400L Moorland Gold, a natural, organic compost rich in nutrients from moorland run-off into water filtration beds otherwise destined for landfill.

Configurations

We supply planters as single casks, double casks and any combination of the two!

Both single and double casks are open at the top, which is a good place to water the entire planter. We can leverage stemflow  here, using large plants with abundant foliage to capture and funnel rainfall into the soil beneath.

Ports

Port sizes are variable. Currently we offer sizes from 40 mm to 90 mm ports. The spacing between ports can also be customised, depending on whether you want to prioritise plant diversity and abundance, or the size of individual plants.

Ports are carefully positioned to maximally preserve the cask's integrity while seeking to harmonize with the natural character of the wood.

As an illustrative example, a single cask could accommodate 48 ports, 40mm in diameter, with 10-20cm spacing.

Fixings

Double casks planters consist of two casks joined together with internal and external fixings.

Interior fixings are zinc-coated stainless steel plates.

Exterior fixings can be selected from a range of beautifully crafted, hand-forged iron fixings in a variety of finishes.

Plant Selection

Our initial planting includes a diversity of flavours, colours and textures - a balance of herbs, leafy greens, bioaccumulators, flowering crops for pollinators and more - all selected to build a healthy soil system together.

If you would like to customise your plant selection, there is ample opportunity to do so. From selecting individual plants, to selecting themes such as 'savoury herbs' or 'herbal tea blends'.
